A tragic accident in Orange claimed the life of a 74-year-old man on Wednesday night after he was struck by an Orange County Sheriff’s Department SUV. Authorities have since identified the victim as Gregory John Beckmann.
The collision occurred around 10:15 p.m. near the intersection of Chapman Avenue and Prospect Street. According to police, Beckmann was crossing Chapman Avenue outside of a designated crosswalk when the sheriff’s vehicle, which did not have its emergency lights or sirens activated, struck him. The impact caused extensive damage to the SUV’s windshield.
First responders from the Orange Fire Department arrived quickly but were unable to save Beckmann, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the accident, a section of Chapman Avenue between Prospect and James streets was temporarily closed as investigators examined the scene and gathered evidence.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding what may have contributed to the crash, and it remains unclear whether citations or charges will follow. The incident is still under active investigation.
The community is now mourning Beckmann’s sudden passing, while officials continue to remind residents of the importance of roadway safety and awareness for both pedestrians and drivers.
