The West Oakland community is grieving the loss of Tony Jerome Norman, a 67-year-old hospital security guard, who was tragically killed Wednesday evening while making his way home.

According to police and family members, the shooting occurred near the intersection of 17th and Brush streets, where Norman was caught in the middle of an exchange of gunfire between two vehicles. Returning from BART after finishing work at Kaiser Hospital, Norman had no connection to the violence that unfolded around him.

Family members said Norman was struck during the crossfire, and despite immediate response from paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, who witnessed the chaotic aftermath, recalled the moment with heartbreak. “It’s just like the O.K. Corral out here,” she told KTVU, describing the horror of seeing first responders rush to assist—only to realize the victim was her husband.

Loved ones remember Norman as a hardworking, honorable man, originally from North Carolina, who had built his life and family in California. He worked faithfully as a security guard, dedicating his days to protecting others, and lived with integrity and devotion to his family.

A verified GoFundMe campaign launched by his relatives describes the senseless loss: “Tony did not deserve this. He was an innocent victim, a devoted family man who lived with integrity.” Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to help cover funeral and burial expenses.

The Oakland Police Department Homicide Unit is actively investigating the shooting. At this time, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not released any suspect information. Police are urging anyone with details about the incident to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.

Norman’s family, friends, and community are left heartbroken, mourning the loss of a man remembered for his strength, humility, and dedication. His death serves as another painful reminder of the innocent lives often stolen by gun violence.
