A 17-year-old boy is recovering after being shot during a large house party that drew nearly 100 attendees early Tuesday morning in the Town of Newburgh, NY.
The incident took place at a home on Carter Avenue shortly after midnight, where police say chaos broke out among the crowd. Viewer-recorded video shows officers with guns drawn swarming the street, eventually taking a suspect into custody. Authorities also deployed a drone to search the surrounding area from above.
The teen victim underwent surgery at St. Luke’s Hospital and is now in stable condition, according to officials.
Neighbors described the scene as unlike anything they had ever witnessed in the usually quiet community.
“My husband was awake, and he saw all the cops come out and the kids running… but it’s crazy. This is a quiet place,” said resident Daisy Flores. Another neighbor recalled the sudden glow of flashing lights flooding the street: “I looked out, and there were a bunch of police cars—state police down there and three or four cop cars up here.”
Witnesses reported seeing partygoers scattering in all directions, hiding behind trees, and cutting through nearby yards to escape.
Uniformed officers remained on the scene for hours, while a plainclothes investigator canvassed the area, knocking on doors and speaking with residents. Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
Police have identified the suspect as 18-year-old Keiyi S. Bascus of New Windsor. He faces three counts of burglary and attempted grand larceny and is being held pending arraignment.
The shooting is still under investigation, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Town of Newburgh Police Department at 845-564-1100.
