Remembering Jim Perry: Beloved Educator, Coach, and Blue Jay Legend (1938–2024)
The Washington community mourns the loss of Jim Perry, a legendary teacher, coach, athletic director, and school administrator, who passed away yesterday at the age of 86.

Jim devoted more than 30 years of service to the Washington School District, beginning his career in the 1962–63 school year and helping to educate and mentor over 8,000 students during his remarkable tenure. His dedication and impact were honored in 2023 with his induction into the WINGS Hall of Fame as an Educator.

Beyond the classroom and the principal’s office, Jim was a gifted athlete himself, excelling in basketball and baseball during his high school and college years in Oklahoma. Known affectionately as “Coach,” he was admired for his competitive spirit—whether playing for Bud’s teams in the 1960s and ’70s, or challenging students in games of horse and one-on-one, contests he rarely lost. Many will also remember his legendary, bone-crushing handshake that left a lasting impression—literally and figuratively—on generations of Blue Jays.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Julie, and their daughters, Jodie and Jill, along with a wide circle of family, friends, former students, and colleagues who will carry his memory forward. His passing is a profound loss not only for those closest to him but also for the entire “Blue Jay Nation” that he helped shape and inspire.

A true Blue Jay great, Jim Perry’s legacy of leadership, mentorship, and sportsmanship will be sorely missed at WHS and throughout the Washington community.
